Local and family history

Libraries and Archives collect a constantly growing resource covering all aspects of Kent, past, present and future to help you research the history of your family, house, town or village. The materials are held in a variety of formats: some are printed and some available on microfilm and microfiche.

Within the collections you can expect to find in our main town centre libraries would be examples of the following:

  • books and pamphlets
  • directories and yearbooks
  • annual Reports
  • government publications of local interest.
  • newspapers and periodicals (on Kent, local and family history, of local interest)
  • maps and plans (including Ordnance Survey maps, shopping centre plans and early printed maps).
  • illustrations (including photographs, prints and postcards).
  • memorabilia (including local transport timetables).
  • census Returns from 1841 - 1891 (for their area).

Main libraries produce a guide to their Local Studies collection, which should be referred to for further information.

In most other libraries you will find small collections, while the County Local Studies Collection containing material covering all aspects of the whole historic County of Kent is held at the Centre for Kentish Studies.
Collections are generally for reference use only but lending copies of some of the books are available.
